I am learning to ski only for the beauty of the mountains

A reflection on learning to ski, facing fear on steep slopes, and finding the courage to continue for the beauty of the mountains.

TRANSITIONSTORIES

As you might know by now, I’ve been learning to ski and to be honest it’s not easy. Especially for someone like me who has only just started trying to keep balance on two narrow planks while sliding fast down a hill. It’s scary because, first I’m not used to this speed and I worry about losing control and hurting my bones or other parts of my body I don’t even know about yet 😅. And second, because it requires muscles I don’t really have right now, so I have to make double the effort to stay balanced.

The only reason I’m doing this and accepting all the risks that come with it is because I love the unique beauty that nature takes on at the top of the mountains. From up there, the snow takes shapes you rarely get to see down in the valley and the sunsets and sunrises are so unique and powerful and you can only truly witness them when you are high in the mountains. End of the story.

So the bottom line is that it’s this unique beauty that encourages me to take the risk and do something I’m absolutely not comfortable with. Isn’t that a repeating pattern in life for many humans? We do something difficult or risky because we love someone or love something. Like in those old stories and legends where a lover climbs a dangerous mountain to pick a rare flower that can heal the one they love, or like Farhad who spent years breaking hard stones for his beloved.

Here are some photos from the mountain that my partner took when he went snowboarding. I hope one day I can take photos like these myself, with my own hands and my own camera 🙂.
